Heartland Mutual Insurance has an excellent opportunity in our Claims Department for a Adjuster Level I, Auto Physical Damage Claims.
What you will do…
- Independently manage low-complexity physical damage claims, reviewing photos, appraisals, and repair documentation to determine liability and coverage.
- Coordinate with appraisers, vendors, and customers to ensure timely claim resolution.
- Handle Minor Injury Guideline (MIG) claims under the AB framework.
- Conduct calls for more complex AB files to collect information and assess treatment needs.
- Provide administrative support assistance as required.
- Respond to inquiries from claimants, brokers, Agents, and Direct Sales Center staff.
- Provide timely updates and explain coverage, claims processes, and next steps in clear and empathetic terms.
- Work with Senior Adjusters and Team Leads to gain exposure to more complex claim types.
- Actively handle 5-10% of assigned files as stretch claims to support career development.
- Assist during surge periods or catastrophes with triage tasks and low-complexity claims.
What you will bring…
- 1-2 years of insurance experience preferred; co-op or internship experience will be considered.
- Post-secondary education in Insurance, Business, or a related field; CIP coursework in progress is an asset.
- Basic understanding of auto damage, injury claim fundamentals, and policy interpretation.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and claims management systems.
- Strong attention to detail and a willingness to learn.
- Excellent time management, prioritization, and communication skills.

Adjuster Level II, Auto Physical Damage Claims – Waterloo, Ontario
What you will do…
- Independently manage low- to intermediate-complexity auto claims from collision to total loss.
- Investigate, evaluate, and settle claims fairly and efficiently, with timely reserving and same-day settlement offers.
- Identify and escalate claims involving injury or third-party property damage for appropriate reassignment or consultation.
- Work closely with appraisers, repair shops, and rental vendors to control costs and ensure timely service.
- Ensure accurate, compliant documentation that meets internal and regulatory standards.
- Communicate clearly with policyholders, brokers, and internal teams to manage expectations, providing consistent updates through all stages of the claim.
- Spot potential fraud, litigation, or complex claims and escalate appropriately.
- Support surge response during CAT events and assist in high-volume situations.
- Take on stretch assignments to grow toward more senior adjusting roles.
What you will bring…
- 2-4 years of auto claims adjusting experience.
- Post-secondary education in Insurance, Business, or related field; CIP designation in progress preferred.

What you will do…
- Create, develop, facilitate, and continuously improve comprehensive training programs, tailored to department needs and aligned to industry and corporate standards.
- Collaborate with management to assess training needs, close knowledge gaps, and support succession planning.
- Engage and act as the liaison for external training providers, subject matter experts, and industry professionals to enhance internal training.
- Guide internal stakeholders on effective coaching, champion a learning culture, and refine mentorship programs.
- Regularly assess effectiveness of mentorship programs, refining based on feedback and measurable outcomes.
- Monitor performance by implementing tools to measure training outcomes, align with audit findings, and provide targeted support to staff.

Senior Field Adjuster, Property Claims – Waterloo, Ontario
What you will do…
- Investigate complex losses through assessing severe property damage, documenting scenes with photos and diagrams, identifying origin/cause, and preparing detailed estimates.
- Oversee high-value residential, commercial, and farm claims, set reserves, and negotiate settlements.
- Be the key liaison for high-severity claims with brokers, agents, and vendors, communicating empathetically and professionally with policyholders.
- Coordinate with external vendors and legal professionals as needed for expert input and dispute resolution.
- Share expertise with colleagues, mentor on complex losses, and collaborate with internal stakeholders to align field practices with company standards.
- Act as a frontline leader during catastrophe response situations, conducting urgent site inspections, supporting team triage, and participating in CAT readiness planning.
