Personal Lines Underwriting Specialist – Waterloo, Ontario
What you will do…
- What you will do…
- Act as the lead person on all special projects and initiatives as may be required.
- Assist in the development and delivery of technical and non-technical Underwriting training to internal staff and external brokers and business partners.
- Lead training initiatives both in group and in one on one settings as well as developing training materials
- Has specialized knowledge of own products and pricing to interpret and provide guidance to others (co-workers and distributors)
- Uses full knowledge of policy wordings to train junior staff with risk analysis, recommendation of missing coverage, and generation of additional product line sales
- Provides training to new hires and junior staff to ensure compliance and minimize company exposure;
- Fully understands the common terms, conditions and exclusions of policy coverage’s and can recognize gaps in coverage, or exposure to loss
- Understands the political, legal and social influences on underwriting own product line, and ensures compliance with established principles.
- Aware of acceptance rules for other related lines of business
- Refers to other product line underwriters accordingly
- Can explain factors affecting loss ratios, severity and frequency
- Analyzing all relevant data using appropriate software to determine whether the level of risk is acceptable;
What you will bring…
- Have 8-10 years of complex underwriting experience
- Post-secondary education, CIP designation is an asset
- You have exemplary analytical skills and can make informed decisions.
- You are a skilled communicator who can adapt your approach to your audience.
- You can influence decisions and negotiate strategically.
- You are an enthusiastic learner who thrives within a team or independently.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal.
- You have proven decision-making and analytical skills, including the ability to determine how to grow business profitability through assessment and analysis of individual risks.

Farm Underwriter – Waterloo, Ontario
What will you do…
- Assess and evaluate risks within the farm portfolio to negotiate pricing and underwriting conditions with brokers.
- Accept, reject, approve, renew or cancel policies in accordance with Heartland’s underwriting guidelines and procedures as well as those contained in program agreements, applicable laws and regulations.
- Build trusted business relationships with brokers, tailor your approach, and seize opportunities.
- Participate in broker visits, industry functions and marketing events in support of business objectives.
- Be involved in stimulating, challenging projects and development opportunities to grow your skills and expertise.
What you will bring….
- 2-3 years experience in farm underwriting.
- Curious, desire to learn, strong analysis and synthesis skills.
- Ability to make decisions in urgent situations, solve complex problems, recommend courses of action, and take calculated risks.
- Skilled communicator, both written and verbal English, who likes to make decisions and excels at influencing others.
- CIP designation or actively pursuing.
- Strong decision-making skills and ability to bring creativity to underwriting risks.
- Experience with Guidewire P&C Insurance Software & Technology a strong asset, not required.
- Ability to apply underwriting philosophy and knowledge to strategic goals.

- 3 years of experience in property & casualty insurance underwriting
- CIP and/or post-secondary education or University degree with partial completion of CIP designation is preferred.
