What you will do…
- General
- Develop the team’s talent base – skills, capabilities, knowledge.
- Strategically plan, manage, and coach the team daily.
- Provides regular project updates to stakeholders. Anticipate obstacles and raises them in advance; proposes possible solutions to obstacles.
- Leads projects from beginning to end, including documentation. Delegates effectively, including following up where appropriate.
- Research & Development
- Research, extracts, and manipulates complex data from relevant and diverse sources, and assesses data quality.
- Provides and delivers innovated tools to provide company value.
- Investigates and builds on the use of new innovated ratemaking and insurance techniques. Share findings across the team and organization, including formal implementations when appropriate.
- Using data analytics, develop and re-evaluate underwriting appetite by identifying trends in company performance. Share and work with other company stakeholders with ensuing actions.
- Pricing
- Coordinate and perform rate reviews on all lines of business, as prioritized by the company. This includes but is not limited to creating rate indications, loss ratio analysis, competitive analysis, completing filings, calculating impacts, while using actuarial ratemaking principles, data analytics, GLMs or other advanced statistical techniques.
- Using data analytics, develop and re-evaluate underwriting appetite by identifying trends in company performance. Share and work with other company stakeholders with ensuing actions.
- Coordinate and perform regular rate filings with provincial regulators.
- Work with Leadership, Underwriting and IT teams on rate reviews and other strategic actions.
- Data Analytics
- Understand and effectively utilize Heartland’s Guidewire systems and their underlying data structures.
- Conduct data extraction as necessary.
- Conduct data exploration, such as quote data, billing data, and new experience extractions.
What you will bring…
- University degree (Computer Science, Mathematics/Statistics or Actuarial) is preferred or equivalent experience.
- A minimum of 5 years of progressive, relevant actuarial experience.
- A minimum of 5 actuarial exams. FCAS or ACAS an asset.
- High Proficiency with SAS, SQL, and Excel.
- A thorough understanding of P&C pricing and ratemaking concepts.
- Demonstrated strength in oral, written and presentation communication skills.
- Prior management experience is preferred.
- A working knowledge of Emblem would be an asset.

AB Claims Representative II – New Minas, Nova Scotia or Waterloo, Ontario

What you will do…
- Interview claimants to ensure we have adequate information to confirm priority of payment, WSIB and/or loss transfer potential.
- Provide counsel and direction to claimants regarding SABS, benefit eligibility, claims process and procedures, including use of FSRA approved forms or formal correspondence, as required.
- Manage treatment plans and invoicing within the HCAI system–arrange for timely payment, and response within regulation timelines.
- Working with our legal counsel where disputes have been filed through the LAT.
- Request and review medical records, summarizing key information in the file journal.
- Ensure all files are tracked and kept up-to-date through consistent use of our diary system.
- Process specified benefit cheques within guidelines.
- Ensure adequate reserving throughout the life of the file.
- Co-ordinate medical examinations with the AB Claims Assistant, as required.
- Accountable for claims at all transaction levels including, coverage interpretation, evaluation, reserve adjustments, payments, written and verbal communication, expert requirements, and internal reporting requirements
- Consults as required for authority requests with respect to payments, settlements, and incurred handling.

What you will bring….
- 2-3 years experience in farm underwriting.
- Curious, desire to learn, strong analysis and synthesis skills.
- Ability to make decisions in urgent situations, solve complex problems, recommend courses of action, and take calculated risks.
- Skilled communicator, both written and verbal English, who likes to make decisions and excels at influencing others.
- CIP designation or actively pursuing.

Financial Controller – Waterloo, Ontario
The Controller will be a hands-on leader with strong business acumen reporting to the Vice President & Chief Financial Officer, the Financial Controller works closely with the CFO and provides support to the executive team working in within the Finance Department to oversee and develop accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure financial accuracy and regulatory compliance.
They will play a key role in overseeing the financial health of the organization and supporting strategic decision-making, using advanced problem-solving resolution skills. They will have a crucial role in identifying and managing financial risk. They will oversee a small team, with emphasis on cross-functional collaboration, continuous improvement for processes and internal controls, including enhanced reporting requirements within the Guidewire system.
What you will do…
Internal Controls, Processes and Audit
- Ensure that appropriate accounting policies, procedures and effective financial internal controls are in place.
- Manage Guidewire deficiencies and improvements as they relate to accounting/reporting.
- Ensure compliance with all IFRS standards and Statutory requirements.
- Create an audit workplan for the co-op student.
Financial Reporting and Financial Planning & Analysis
- Prepare internal financial statements ensuring accuracy and timeliness, analyzing and understanding variances to prior year and budget.
- Coordinate with functional leaders to ensure actual vs. budgeted expenses are explained and variances are understood.
- Ensure all account reconciliations are completed and reviewed monthly with action items to clear reconciling items.
- Compile and analyze financial reporting packages.
- Partner with system provider to ensure accurate reports are developed for balancing and reconciling.
- Assist in the preparation of annual financial budgets.
- Year-end financial statement preparation including notes to the financial statement.
- Manage relationship with auditors ensuring all year-end work is completed on time.
Regulatory and Tax Compliance
- Ensure OSFI guidelines are understood and new guidelines and modifications to existing guidelines are understood and impact to the company is known and highlighted to the CFO/CEO.
- Ensure all regulatory filings are completed on time.
- Ensure all tax filings are completed and paid on time.
Regulatory and Tax Compliance
This role will develop strong relationships with the billings team, internal Actuarial and Claims departments, and will work closely with the Appointed Actuary for actuarial reviews. This role will have a close working relationship with the CFO and provide support to the Executive Team.
What you will bring…
- Minimum 7 years accounting experience.
- Financial services industry experience required, with insurance experience as a strong asset.
- Experience managing an accounting or reporting function with responsibility for monthly and quarterly close processes, as well as related financial reporting.
- Excellent knowledge of IFRS4 and IFRS17.
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, or related discipline.
- CPA designation.
- Impeccable planning, analytical and organizational skills.
- Proven ability to think strategically and identify risks and issues pro-actively.
