Heartland Mutual Insurance has an excellent opportunity in our Analytics Department for a Senior
Actuarial Analyst.
What you will do…
- Perform rate reviews on all lines of business, as prioritized by the company. This includes
- but is not limited to creating rate indications, loss ratio analysis, competitive analysis,
- completing filings, calculating impacts, while using actuarial ratemaking principles, data
- analytics, GLMs or other advanced statical techniques.
- Perform research and data analysis on all information needs relating to all business
segments of the company. - Research and implement more advanced analytics tools and techniques for the company.
- Understand and effectively utilize Heartland’s policy admin and claims systems and their
underlying data structures. - Works with regulators to complete regulated auto filings.
- Perform research and data analysis on informational needs relating to all business
segments of the company. - Design, develop and continually improve the analytical data summary tools distributed.
- Develop, improve and maintain Heartland’s datamarts for all lines of business with an
objective of deploying self-serve capabilities for the business.
What you will bring…
- University degree (Actuarial Science, Mathematics/Statistics or a related discipline).
- Successful completion of 4 to 6 exams from the Casualty Actuarial Society.
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience in an actuarial/data analysis role, preferably with P&C
insurance exposure or a significant educational background in a related discipline. - High Proficiency with SAS, SQL, and Excel.
- A working knowledge of Emblem would be an asset.
- A good understanding of P&C pricing and ratemaking concepts.
- Demonstrated strength in oral, written and presentation communication skills.
- Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team.

What you will do…
- General
- Develop the team’s talent base – skills, capabilities, knowledge.
- Strategically plan, manage, and coach the team daily.
- Provides regular project updates to stakeholders. Anticipate obstacles and raises them in advance; proposes possible solutions to obstacles.
- Leads projects from beginning to end, including documentation. Delegates effectively, including following up where appropriate.
- Research & Development
- Research, extracts, and manipulates complex data from relevant and diverse sources, and assesses data quality.
- Provides and delivers innovated tools to provide company value.
- Investigates and builds on the use of new innovated ratemaking and insurance techniques. Share findings across the team and organization, including formal implementations when appropriate.
- Using data analytics, develop and re-evaluate underwriting appetite by identifying trends in company performance. Share and work with other company stakeholders with ensuing actions.
- Pricing
- Coordinate and perform rate reviews on all lines of business, as prioritized by the company. This includes but is not limited to creating rate indications, loss ratio analysis, competitive analysis, completing filings, calculating impacts, while using actuarial ratemaking principles, data analytics, GLMs or other advanced statistical techniques.
- Using data analytics, develop and re-evaluate underwriting appetite by identifying trends in company performance. Share and work with other company stakeholders with ensuing actions.
- Coordinate and perform regular rate filings with provincial regulators.
- Work with Leadership, Underwriting and IT teams on rate reviews and other strategic actions.
- Data Analytics
- Understand and effectively utilize Heartland’s Guidewire systems and their underlying data structures.
- Conduct data extraction as necessary.
- Conduct data exploration, such as quote data, billing data, and new experience extractions.
What you will bring…
- University degree (Computer Science, Mathematics/Statistics or Actuarial) is preferred or equivalent experience.
- A minimum of 5 years of progressive, relevant actuarial experience.
- A minimum of 5 actuarial exams. FCAS or ACAS an asset.
- High Proficiency with SAS, SQL, and Excel.
- A thorough understanding of P&C pricing and ratemaking concepts.
- Demonstrated strength in oral, written and presentation communication skills.
- Prior management experience is preferred.
- A working knowledge of Emblem would be an asset.

AB Claims Representative II – New Minas, Nova Scotia or Waterloo, Ontario

What you will do…
- Interview claimants to ensure we have adequate information to confirm priority of payment, WSIB and/or loss transfer potential.
- Provide counsel and direction to claimants regarding SABS, benefit eligibility, claims process and procedures, including use of FSRA approved forms or formal correspondence, as required.
- Manage treatment plans and invoicing within the HCAI system–arrange for timely payment, and response within regulation timelines.
- Working with our legal counsel where disputes have been filed through the LAT.
- Request and review medical records, summarizing key information in the file journal.
- Ensure all files are tracked and kept up-to-date through consistent use of our diary system.
- Process specified benefit cheques within guidelines.
- Ensure adequate reserving throughout the life of the file.
- Co-ordinate medical examinations with the AB Claims Assistant, as required.
- Accountable for claims at all transaction levels including, coverage interpretation, evaluation, reserve adjustments, payments, written and verbal communication, expert requirements, and internal reporting requirements
- Consults as required for authority requests with respect to payments, settlements, and incurred handling.

- What you will do…
- Act as the lead person on all special projects and initiatives as may be required.
- Assist in the development and delivery of technical and non-technical Underwriting training to internal staff and external brokers and business partners.
- Lead training initiatives both in group and in one on one settings as well as developing training materials
- Has specialized knowledge of own products and pricing to interpret and provide guidance to others (co-workers and distributors)
- Uses full knowledge of policy wordings to train junior staff with risk analysis, recommendation of missing coverage, and generation of additional product line sales
- Provides training to new hires and junior staff to ensure compliance and minimize company exposure;
- Fully understands the common terms, conditions and exclusions of policy coverage’s and can recognize gaps in coverage, or exposure to loss
- Understands the political, legal and social influences on underwriting own product line, and ensures compliance with established principles.
- Aware of acceptance rules for other related lines of business
- Refers to other product line underwriters accordingly
- Can explain factors affecting loss ratios, severity and frequency
- Analyzing all relevant data using appropriate software to determine whether the level of risk is acceptable;
